LOVE NOT SLEEP
By George Card
Sleeping is necessary for our well being and the average sleep time is 8 hours, which means that some of us do not need 8 hours. Those of you who really do need 8 or more hours of sleep, all I can advice you, is to go to sleep earlier and schedule your time better.
Some people have trouble with sleep because they have physical or emotional problems. If you have a hard time going to sleep check with your doctor. If you sleep too much also check with your doctor. Sleep problems or disorders are sometimes symptoms of a disease.
Sleep deprivation occurs when a person does not get enough sleep. When that happens, the person does not react as efficiently as he is capable of. Many accidents occur because people do not sleep enough. Many people stay up late to watch late TV when they should be in bed resting.
People who work the graveyard shift are prone to suffer from sleep deprivation, the reason is simple; the human body was never meant to be awake at night. The graveyard shift should be abolished, it is an attack upon humanity. The only people who should be work at night should be law enforcement and emergency medical personal everyone else should be sleep in bed.
Severe sleep deprivation will cause visions, slow reactions and suddenly falling asleep. I have worked the graveyard shift before and I saw visions and things that were definitely not there. Sometimes I did not know if I was awake or asleep, I slept during the day but it seemed like it never was enough. There is a good reason why it is called the graveyard shift.
With all that said, missing sleep once in a while will not kill you. A person could go many days without sleep with no physiological or physical damage. The world record for going without sleep is eleven days and a college student achieved it. Jesus did not sleep the night before his death, but his apostles just could not keep awake. Paul went without sleep often. (II Corinthians 11:27)
I know going without sleep is a sacrifice. As a former soldier I went many times without sleep sometimes two days in a row, because I was on guard duty. If you come from the world you know about the many nights, that were spent with friends; nights of revelry, drinking, and playing cards until the morning.
If the world is willing to go without sleep for the armed forces, a night of revelry, and other motives, then surely we can sacrifice once in a while for our Lord.
A watching or vigil conducted once every other month or at least once per year could be very beneficial. It doesn't just have to be a night of prayer, it could also include singing, testimonies, preaching, and others.
The wise man asks " How long wilt thou sleep, o sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: so shalt thy poverty come as one that travelleth and thy want as an armed man". (Proverbs 6:9-11) When the alarm clocks sounds do you hit the snooze button? do you do a little folding of the hands? do you try to get just a little bit more sleep?
Take it not lightly when somebody calls you a sleepy head that person may be joking , but God is serious about your habits. My brother, love not sleep lest thou come to spiritual poverty. (Proverbs 20:13)
